Duties Description The Office of Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services at SUNY Old Westbury is seeking a Senior Counselor.
The Office of Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services is a multidisciplinary team, dedicated to the support and enhancement of the psychological health and wellbeing, personal growth and development of SUNY Old Westbury's students. The Senior Counselor is expected to have a demonstrated experience and skill in the treatment of clients who identify as a part of an underrepresented group and in related issues of equity and social justice. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month position.
The Senior Counselor will:
Provide psychological services to students on both a regular and emergency basis, and when necessary, during non-traditional hours.
Services include, but are not limited to, individual treatment, couple treatment, group treatment, crisis-intervention, triage, workshops, clinical consultation, and case management.
Initiate and take part in outreach services to the campus community, including collaboration and liaison to other college stakeholders.
Support the students in their pursuit of academic excellence and persistence.
Assist in training activities of pre-doctoral interns, externs, and practicum students.
Serve as a member of the Counseling and Psychological Wellness Team and participate in its meetings.
Provide services, including consultation and collaboration, to other college personnel, including faculty, student affairs staff and student leaders.
Serve the Division of Student Affairs and the College of Old Westbury by serving on committees and participating in division- and campus-wide activities.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
A terminal degree in a therapeutic profession program (Doctoral degree from a clinical or counseling psychology program, or Master's level degree in Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or another educational program directed toward the education of licensed mental health professionals).
A licensure or a temporary permit to practice as a mental health professional in New York State.
A passion for working with students from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds.
A broad "generalist" competence and experience in the assessment and treatment of a wide variety of disorders and life problems for students in underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds.
Ability to manage a large caseload.
Knowledge of and adherence to legal and ethical rules and guidelines regarding the treatment of college students.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in college counseling.
Familiarity with evidence-based practices such as CBT or DBT.
Familiarity with at least one therapeutic orientation (i.e., psychodynamic, humanist, etc).
