Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION
The New York State Institute for Basic Research inDevelopmental Disabilities (IBR) seeks a Neuropathologist (MD)to join and ultimately supervise a team of scientists in ourAlzheimer’s Disease/Autism research area, our MorphologyLaboratory and our Brain and Tissue Bank. Applicants shouldhave a doctoral degree (e.g. MD, PhD, DVM, etc.) in a relevantscientific discipline with evidence of an ability to obtainindependent funding to grow and sustain their researchprogram. In this position, the incumbent will engage instereological study of neurodegeneration and neuronal loss inthe entorhinal cortex and hippocampal formation in the brain,complete neuropathological staging and focus on developmentalabnormalities in the corpus collosum of brains. Responsibilitieswill also include continuing to maintain the current NYS IBRBrain and Tissue Bank’s collection of frozen and formalin fixedbrain tissue and overseeing its expansion. On site centralizedservice
include but are not limited to Microscopy Services includingConfocal, Light Sheet and Electron microscopy; MassSpectrometry; Laboratory Animal Resource Center andEditorial/Grant Writing Services and Statistical Analysis.
Current research underway in this department includes but isnot limited to projects designed to characterize: 1) the dynamicsof multi-regional neurodegeneration and neuronal loss in Downsyndrome; 2) statistical modeling of differences between type,topography, severity and dynamics of neurodegeneration andneuronal loss in Trisomy 21 and Down syndrome with earlyonset Alzheimer’s Disease; 3) comparison of unbiasedstereological estimates of neuropathological changes indevelopmental defects of brain glymphatic system in individualswith Down syndrome and 4) detection of developmentalabnormalities of serotonergic system and brain neurotransmittersystems in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Department scientistsutilize Microbrightfield image analyzers with Stereoinvestigatorsand Neurolucida and work with colleagues trained in 3-Dreconstruction as well as in matching clinical MRI withpostmortem 3-D imaging of neuronal networks and vascularsystems.
IBR is the research arm of the New York State Office for Peoplewith Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). OPWDD isresponsible for coordinating services for New Yorkers withintellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), includingintellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, autism spectrumdisorders, rare genetic syndromes, and other neurologicalimpairments.
NYS OPWDD IBR provides a professional setting in a world-renowned research facility located on Staten Island, NY, on awooded, suburban campus with free off-street parking. Thecompensation package includes New York State HealthInsurance Program (NYSHIP) insurance, a generous sick leaveand vacation package, vesting in the NYS pension fund, and adeferred compensation plan. Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Ph.D. and eight years of professional research experience in the field of Neuropathology.
Additional Comments • The assignment of PS&T employees will be made in accordance with any agreed upon Memorandum of Understanding between PEF and the local DDSO regarding the posting of job vacancies.
