Duties Description The New York State Department of Labor Counsel’s Office is seeking a highly skilled Associate Attorney to join our team and play a key role in the administration and enforcement of the Labor Law. This role involves advising program areas on Labor Law enforcement and representing the Department in administrative hearings and judicial proceedings. The Associate Attorney will guide a team on a range of legal assignments and contribute to process improvements within the Counsel's Office.
Job Duties:
• Advise program areas on issues associated with enforcing Labor Law, including investigative and enforcement strategies and interpretations of law.
• Supervise attorneys representing the Department at administrative hearings and judicial proceedings.
• Develop training programs to foster the professional development of staff.
• Respond to inquiries and requests for legal opinions and interpretations from leadership within Counsel’s office and the Department’s program offices.
• Communicate legal conclusions clearly and effectively in writing and orally.
• Act as the liaison between the Department and the Attorney General’s Office in the defense and prosecution of litigation to which the Department is a party.
• Undertake additional duties to advance the Department's mission and ensure the efficient operation of the Counsel's office.

Admission to the New York State Bar and current registration to practice law in New York State is necessary for continued employment. Disbarment or loss of registration shall result in termination or suspension of employment.

Reassignment Qualifications: (DOL EMPLOYEES ONLY)
Current New York State Department of Labor employee with at least one (1) year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as an Associate Attorney, if you have less than one (1) year, you must be reachable on the current Associate Attorney eligible list for this location, if one exists.
52.6 Transfer Qualifications:
One (1) year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service in a title Grade 27/M-2 or higher determined to be administrative by Civil Service. Transfer candidates must also possess a law degree from an accredited college or university and be able to provide evidence of current registration to practice law in New York State.
Provisional Qualifications: (DOL EMPLOYEES ONLY)
Senior Attorney and/or Senior Attorney (Various Parenthetics), with one (1) year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service may apply. You must show proof that you took the exam on February 26th, 2026 and be reachablen to be appointed permanently.

Additionally, in accordance with Civil Service Law, provisional service immediately prior to a permanent appointment to this title is now credited towards the completion of probation upon permanent appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience managing state or federal litigation or enforcement matters.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Advanced analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
• Effectively manages multiple shifting priorities and meets deadlines with precise attention to detail.
• Adept at contributing effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Additional Comments Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
