Duties Description The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is hiring Maintenance Assistants for the Peekamoose Valley Riparian Corridor within the Sundown Wild Forest Preserve, commonly known as the Peekamoose Blue Hole.

The maintenance assistant in New York State for DEC assists with performing maintenance, repairs, and construction tasks across a diverse range of department facilities and general infrastructure. These positions will primarily be for maintaining the Peekamoose Blue Hole area.

This role requires the ability to operate various types of light-duty motor equipment, pickup trucks, light-duty landscaping trailers, and power tools. Candidate must be capable of performing moderate to heavy physical labor, reading plans, specifications, and manuals, and effectively following written and oral directions. Duties and tasks will include maintaining the accessible trail and footbridge, parking areas, signs and kiosks, litter removal, gates and barriers, fencing, assisting with visitor parking, mowing and trimming vegetation, and identifying and reporting safety and regulatory issues to supervisors. This position requires working outdoors and performing all duties in adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services,such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services..

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades
Traineeship.

Candidates must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 10/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
