Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is developing a Revolutionary War mobile exhibit designed to be flexible enough to set up in a wide variety of locations across New York State during the 2026 visitor season. Exhibiting key objects from OPRHP’s extensive collection, the travelling van will be fully staffed with interpreters and capable of being deployed for anything from day events to week-long programs. OPRHP will partner with government stakeholders, history museums, school districts, libraries, county tourism officials, and state and local 250th Commissions to maximize audiences.
The Revolutionary War 250 Interpreter will work as part of a small team that will share the mobile exhibit with audiences across New York State. The Interpreter will report to the New York in the Revolutionary War Project Manager. Job duties may include but not be limited to:
• Setting up and taking down the mobile exhibit at venues across New York State.
• Interact with the public while the exhibit is on display and learn key points about the war in New York that can be shared with interested patrons.
• Ensure the safe transportation, handling, display, and storage of the historic collections that comprise the exhibition.
• When not traveling with the exhibit, the Interpreter will assist the Collections Management Unit with moving collections and improving storage conditions at the Bureau of Historic Sites (located at Peebles Island State Park).
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•There are no minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Additional Comments PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•Strong knowledge of United States and New York State history.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Ability to interact with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
• Ability to perform moderate physical labor including lifting.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Strong written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
BENEFITS:
This position has the option to join the NYS Employee’s Retirement System and may be eligible for health insurance, dental and vision coverage as well as the opportunity for paid time off in the form of vacation, sick, personal and holiday leave after time and service requirements has been met.
