Duties Description Hempstead Lake State Park Environmental Education and Resiliency Center is an environmental education facility at Field 1 in Hempstead Lake State Park. Under the general direction and supervision of the Environmental Education personnel and Park Managers, the incumbent of this position will be engaged in the performance and coordination of the following duties:
• Teach environmental education programs for age groups ranging from Pre-K through adult. Operate audio-visual equipment (i.e., laptop and Smartboard) during educational programming and community presentations.
• Assist in the planning and organization of quarterly program schedules for the public. Coordinate and schedule public and private education programs.
• Create environmental education program materials using many different computer programs. Maintain database information. Create quarterly program brochure.
• Create outreach and marketing content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram).
• Engage with local community, schools, and special interest groups.
• Record attendance for programs, festivals, and volunteer events.
• Care and maintenance of exhibit animals: ensure all housing is kept clean and that the requirements necessary for the health of the animals are met. Handling of animals will be required, including turtles and aquarium maintenance
• Basic maintenance of buildings & grounds including, but not limited to, litter control, grounds upkeep and landscaping, snow and ice control, restroom facilities (restock), and other tasks and/or activities as described. Maintain butterfly garden, composting, and other gardens.
• Assist with revenue and prepare reports as required.
• Assist Park patrons with questions, resolve complaints, and assist patrons with emergencies or situations requiring First Aid.
• Provide reception support at the Center’s front desk when needed, including greeting visitors, answering questions from the public, and answering phones. Assist with administrative tasks for the park office as needed and all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Preferred qualifications:
• Pursuing BA or BS in Biology or Environmental Science or relative experience including teaching.
• Teaching experience.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess a valid Driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Ability to work with MS Excel, Power Point, Word, Access and Adobe Express
• Ability to speak in front of groups; ability to care for small animals
• The appointee will be expected to work weekends, various shifts, holidays, and special events as required to provide operational coverage.
