Duties Description The Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (LINC) is a fully accredited laboratory responsible for monitoring New York State’s nuclear power plants, responding to requests for radiological laboratory support for statewide incidents, participating in radiological emergency response activities, and protecting the food supply from harmful radioactive contamination. A Research Scientist is needed to provide technical and scientific support for nuclear regulatory matters and oversee day-to-day quality assurance for all radioactivity measurements in environmental and food samples.

Minimum Qualifications Non Competitive: Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences AND three years of post-degree professional research experience* in an appropriate field.

*Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in an accredited radiochemistry laboratory, including knowledge of radiation safety protocols, following standard operating procedures, and maintaining data integrity through an established quality control system; experience in preparing environmental, food, or bioassay samples by techniques for chemical or radiochemical analyses; five or more years of post-collegiate experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory, including sample preparation, preparation of solutions, instrumental analyses, and method troubleshooting; experience in laboratory record keeping, including logging of sample information, reagent and supply inventories, etc.; and knowledge of database software (e.g. Microsoft Access).

Additional Comments Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
