Duties Description The goal of the Archaeology Internship is to continue the project of physically reorganizing the archaeology collections storage area at the Division for Historic Preservation (DHP) located at Peebles Island State Park. DHP curates approximately 1.5 million artifacts from various New York State historic sites and parks. This collection is stored within approximately 3,000 artifact boxes.

Work will be conducted in the archaeology collections storage 2-3 days per week and will coincide with when the Archaeology Conservator is on site. Daily tasks will include but not be limited to:

• The physical reorganization of artifact collection boxes aided by the examination of existing artifact catalog data.
• Lifting and moving artifact boxes (approximately 20lbs max).
• Existing boxes will be removed from their current location in storage, the artifact bags within will be placed in new boxes, and updated provenience information will be attached with new box labels to improve the management/retrieval of specific artifacts for exhibits and research.
• Reboxed artifacts will then be reshelved in the storage area and the storage map updated.
• Specific shelf locations will be recorded for each box and included in the updated artifact database.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Currently enrolled student pursuing a master’s degree in Archaeology/Anthropology, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies, Information Technology, Liberal Arts or Social Science.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:

• Excellent organizational and research skills with close attention to detail.
• Experience with MS Suite (Word, Access, Excel).
• Ability to reach, bend, stoop, lift up to 20lbs.
• Basic understanding of best practices for digital data management.
• Archaeology experience is a plus but not necessary.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
• This position is from June 2026 through August 2026.
