Duties Description Position Summary

The TRS Investment Officer 1/Trainee supports the Public Equities team through robust quantitative research and technical infrastructure that support systematic investment strategies. The position centers on assisting in the development and testing of factor models, alpha signals, and risk forecasting tools. This role requires close collaboration with investment information and technology teams to improve automation, data workflows, and portfolio analytics. This position will require some travel.

Job Duties

The TRS Investment Officer 1/Trainee will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Assist in quantitative research on equity factors, alpha signals, and risk models

Help maintain and improve data pipelines for financial and market data

Contribute to performance analysis and reporting, including factor attribution and risk exposure summaries

Collaborate with senior team members on model development and portfolio construction projects

Participate in enhancing internal tools and dashboards for portfolio evaluation and risk monitoring

Participate in cross-functional initiatives with technology and investment teams to enhance automation and workflow efficiency

Stay informed on market trends and quantitative techniques through training and research

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate on cross-functional projects and provide support to broader Public Equities team initiatives as needed

Attend conferences and educational sessions to gain market insights and network with peers

Attend various committee and quarterly board meetings, as necessary, presenting relevant material

Represent Public Equities as needed on various System wide initiatives and projects

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Traineeship Enter at the Grade 14: A bachelor's degree or higher.

Traineeship Enter at the Grade 16: A bachelor's degree or higher; and one year of professional investment experience.

Grade 18: A bachelor's degree or higher; and two years of professional investment experience; or a bachelor's degree and completion of a two-year traineeship.

Qualifying experience includes:

Investment-related duties reflecting a fundamental knowledge of the financial markets and an understanding of the economic forces that impact the financial markets, or analysis of financial or economic data; investment risk or portfolio management; investment operations; investment compliance, investment auditing, investment accounting, and quantitative analysis.

Commercial real estate investing (investment acquisitions or asset management) or commercial mortgage lending, specifically involving the financing, investing in, leasing of, or asset management of large commercial real estate assets (generally properties worth $10 million or more).

Non-qualifying experience includes activities applicable to small commercial properties (e.g., two to four family homes), the sale or brokerage of single-family homes, or experience marketing or selling financial service products to individuals, as performed by financial advisors and stockbrokers.

Substitutions:

Successful completion of all three levels of the CFA exam may substitute for two years of experience; a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation, a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), a Member of the Appraisal Institute (MAI), or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may substitute for one year of experience; and a master's degree in Business Administration concentrating in Finance or a closely related concentration may substitute for two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a STEM field

1 year of investment or internship experience in any of the following areas:

Quantitative research, portfolio management or risk analytics at a top-tier financial services firm or institutional asset manager

Experience applying portfolio management tools and concepts including risk modeling, portfolio construction, and performance attribution

Applying technology in support of investment functions

Experience with programming such as Python

Experience in data management, including data cleaning, preprocessing, and analysis

Knowledge of financial risk management, portfolio theory and optimization

Good communication skills - written and verbal

Good time management skills

Detail oriented, analytical and able to synthesize data and make logical decisions

Intellectually curious, creative, and open to exploring new ideas.

Team player with the ability to work independently

Strong work ethic and integrity
