Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in genetics, biology, chemistry, or a related field and one year of relevant professional experience in an appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
The preferred candidate will have work experience or course work in clinical laboratory testing; public health and excellent written and communication skills. Previous experience with tandem mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography would be beneficial.
Duties Description The Assistant Research Scientist will have a dual role in the New York State Newborn Screening Program including follow-up activities and laboratory-based clinical testing component. The incumbent will independently communicate with newborn screening specialty care centers throughout NYS to ensure that case referrals are being handled appropriately and expeditiously; will manage case reviews and will ensure that critical and borderline screening results are monitored and tracked through case closure. Additionally, will perform critical laboratory assays using wet-chemical and instrumental methods to identify newborns with inherited metabolic disorders.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
