Minimum Qualifications Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as a Chief Computer Operator OR in a position at G-21 or higher deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of Civil Service Law OR in a position approved for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in advancement of more than two salary grades.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Operational experience and expertise with an IBM mainframe and/or Unisys operating system and associated peripheral equipment, and/or expertise with scheduling batch work using automated batch scheduling systems
• Ability to resolve problems by developing solutions and implementing improvements to processes
• Good oral and written communication skills

• Supervisory experience
• Ability to maintain an effective working environment with managers, customers, and co-workers

Duties Description Under the direction of the Information Technology Specialist 4 (Operations), within Data Center Operations in the Chief Operations Office, the Chief Computer Operator, SG-23 will be responsible for providing 24 X7 service to our customer agencies in either Console Operations or Production Control in an IBM mainframe, Unisys A series, Unisys 2200 series, and/or open systems environment at the Swan Street location.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Console Monitoring:
• Manage data center resources proficiently to provide acceptable service in mission-critical environment.
• Assign staff to properly meet operations and agency goals.
• Monitor specific functions performed by console operations staff, such as Initial Program Loads (IPLs), on the IBM mainframe.
• Supervise communications between staff and customer agencies, or vendors to ensure proper responses.
• Check production print for quality control.
• Execute the established procedures for problem escalation.
• Perform periodic rounds of the raised floor area to ensure the environmental conditions are suitable for the computer rooms and the equipment therein.
• Understand and participate in Change Management and Problem Management processes.
• Notify appropriate parties regarding application or system problems, according to procedure.
• Create daily reports, charts, statistics, and databases.
• Ensure operators understand how to perform basic cleaning and maintenance of the printer hardware and review the schedules to make sure they are adhered to.
• Keep print room procedures documented and up-to-date.
• Keep all print room statistics and other pertinent print room information current.
• Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities.
• Act as shift and site manager in their absence
• Non-day shift positions also assist in supervising the shift, including ensuring staff are performing the required activities for console monitoring, printing, and job scheduling.

Production Control:
• Schedule batch work on the IBM and/or Unisys mainframes using automated batch scheduling systems.
• Monitor batch jobs for successful completion.
• Work with application support units to fix and restart abended (stopped) jobs and ensure schedule completion.
• Execute the established procedures for problem escalation.
• Understand and participates in Change Management and Problem Management processes.
• Notify appropriate parties regarding application or system problems, according to procedure.
• Create daily reports, charts, statistics and databases.
• Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities.

Assignment will include a restriction on playing Lottery games.

Due to the secure nature of the work, candidates will be required to undergo a special background check.

Some travel to the other locations may be needed for site coverage and for escort duty of non-authorized visitors.

Additional Comments We will be filling multiple position at the Swan Street locatin on any of the shifts listed below. Some travel to the other Data Center Sites may be needed for site coverage and for escort duty of non-authorized visitors.

DAY: 1st Shift, Mon-Fri 7am - 3:15pm
EVENING: 2nd Shift, Mon-Fri 3pm - 11:15pm
NIGHT: 3rd Shift Mon-Fri 11pm - 7:15am
NIGHT and WEEKEND: 3rd Shift Sun-Thurs 11pm - 7:15am
WEEKEND DAY: 4th Shift Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon 7am - 8pm
WEEKEND NIGHT: 5th Shift Fri-Sun 7pm - 8am

Assignments may include a restriction on playing Lottery
games.

Due to the secure nature of the work, candidates will be required to undergo a special background check.
