Minimum Qualifications NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service as a Senior Attorney (G-25); OR a NYS employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title at Grade 23 or above with current NYS Bar Admission and eligible for transfer to Senior Attorney under Sections 70.4 or 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. (Candidates requesting consideration for transfer must also be a graduate of an accredited law school with a LLB or JD degree.)

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate should be a highly motivated individual interested in working in public service as part of an active legal team with at least three years experience as a New York State Attorney. Preferred qualifications include strong research and writing skills, eager to learn new subject areas, demonstrated sound judgment, excellent oral communication skills.

Duties Description The Department of Motor Vehicle’s Counsel’s Office is seeking to fill an Assistant Counsel position in Albany with a candidate possessing New York State contracts experience. Primary duties will include advising the agency on contract matters, drafting and reviewing contracts and MOUs, and working closely with other agency units in drafting RFPs, negotiating contracts, debriefing losing bidders and responding to bid protests. The candidate must have strong writing and communication skills and must work well with others. The position may occasionally involve working with the Attorney General’s Office in handling litigation in both State and Federal courts, drafting legislation and writing regulations, and responding to correspondence from a variety of customers including courts, attorneys, regulated businesses and citizens. The attorney will also respond to phone calls from such customers. Finally, the attorney may conduct training, usually directed to court clerks, judges, and members of the law enforcement community.
