Minimum Qualifications This is a transfer opportunity for New York State Employees who are in a Permanent or Contingent Permanent status as a Secretary 1 OR Eligible to transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Duties Description Two-year traineeship leading to grade 14 (currently $47,773). Starting salary equated to grade 11, $40,324. Location pay of $3,026 will be added to salary listed above. If not already completed, all trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college or university and one or more college or training courses in writing skills within the traineeship.
This position is located in the Civil Rights Bureau (CRB).
Duties:
•Review and respond to complaints and questions submitted by the public either in writing, via email, or by telephone as per CRB intake protocol. Responses will include sending written letters, returning phone calls, and/or sending emails. Provide complainants with complaint forms and informational material, and refer complainants to appropriate organizations or government agencies. Direct questions and complaints to appropriate CRB attorneys for answers and follow up. Input public inquiries in database and update as needed through closure of the intake.
•Assist CRB attorneys with various tasks and litigation support as needed, such as completing routine investigative work for attorney’s review, conducting research on legal and operational matters, preparing chronologies and production charts, creating interview summaries, taking notes and transcribing interviews, tracking compliance deadlines for AODs, assisting with the production of litigation-related documents, preparing written materials for public dissemination, and preparing and delivering presentations with attorneys.
•Fill in for CRB secretary needed to ensure continuous coverage of CRB telephone line and the meeting of visitors during the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Speak with walk-in complainants.
•Be willing to learn new tasks and skills, including use of discovery-management software, Excel, and other programs.
•Spanish language proficiency preferred.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
