Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a New York State Professional Engineer License and current registration. To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Duties Description As a Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) in the Regional Design Group, the selected candidate will perform assigned functional duties under the direction of a Professional Engineer 2 and those duties include but are not limited to:
Design Team Leader duties include supervising and leading a highway or bridge design team throughout all stages of the project development process; coordinating project activities with regional and Main Office functional units, local officials and the public; monitoring project progress with respect to cost, scope, schedule and quality; and managing, assisting and providing quality control for the production of Design Approval Documents, Advance Detail Plans and PS&E packages. Work schedule: M-F 8 am-4:15 pm
Bridge Inspection Team Leader duties include inspecting, preparing and submitting inspection reports for approximately 150 state and locally owned bridges annually; determining when flag conditions exist, providing prompt notifications and preparing flag reports; coordinating inspection work with Work Zone Traffic Control contractors, bridge inspection consultants, and Regional functional groups; updating load rating, vulnerability and inventory data; and assisting with other Bridge Safety Assurance duties, as necessary. Work schedule: 3- 10 hour days (7 AM to 5:45 PM) and 1 - 7.5 hour day (7 AM to 3:15 PM).
Load Rating Engineer duties include supervising and leading the Structural Evaluation and Load Rating Section; preparing, reviewing and approving Level 1 and Level 2 structural load capacity rating calculations; preparing, reviewing and signing all load posting determinations; preparing, reviewing and issuing load rating flags; and serving as a bridge inspection team leader on an as needed basis. Work schedule: M-F 8 am-4:15 pm
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required or the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position must otherwise be demonstrated.
