Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Duties Description Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
Conduct traffic engineering studies and reviews, which include highway capacity analyses; signal warrant analyses; signal timing analyses; traffic modeling; and documentation.
Perform highway safety investigations, which include accident screenings; crash investigation and determination; proposed solutions/remediation; and documentation.
Perform traffic studies in compliance with applicable standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; determine any changes to traffic control devices to address the outcome of the traffic studies, insuring compliance with federal and state standards on traffic control devices.
Work with designers, planners and operational staff in development of scope and plans for capital projects. Perform design review of traffic control devices (including signs, signals and pavement markings) and work zone traffic control in support of the capital program as well as on an as needed basis.
Review highway work permit plans and applications.
Manage the transportation network for optimization of the system capacity and operations.
Communicate (verbal and written) with the general public and elected officials.
In addition, based on operational need, Assistant Engineers may be assigned to various program areas throughout their employment duration to support critical department initiatives.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
At the time of appointment, and continuously thereafter, candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the travel requirements of the position by maintaining a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and/or having access to reliable transportation.
