Minimum Qualifications G14- Bachelor’s degree in biological or physical sciences, and one year of post-degree professional experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
G18 - Bachelor’s degree in biological or physical sciences and two years of post-degree professional experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s degree in biological or physical sciences and one year of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with DNA/RNA purification, DNA amplification, DNA sequencing including next-generation sequencing. Experience developing and documenting laboratory procedures and familiarity with quality control standards for diagnostic laboratories. Degree in medical technology and experience/ability to work in a routine clinical testing environment.
Duties Description The incumbent will participate in all aspects of DNA and RNA next-generation sequencing for molecular diagnostic and research application, including amplicon-based sequencing for newborn screening, and whole-genome sequencing of bacteria, viruses, and other microbial organisms in the Advanced Genomic Technologies Cluster laboratories. Responsibilities include DNA/RNA purification, library preparation, quality control, operation and maintenance of sequencing and other laboratory equipment, monitoring of sequencing data quality and communication of results to diagnostic laboratory staff. Additionally, the Research Scientist, will participate in studies to implement next-generation sequencing in new diagnostic tests or in the development or evaluation of novel methods.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
