Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 11 or higher and either:

Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications - listed below;
or

Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Biologist 1 Aquatic, Biologist 1 Ecology, Biologist 1 Marine or Biologist 1 Wildlife.

55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.

Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates and 70.4 transfer eligibles): Bachelor's or higher degree with 18 semester credit hours in courses such as herpetology, mammalogy, ornithology, wildlife ecology, wildlife habitat management, wildlife health, wildlife management, or wildlife population dynamics.

Duties Description The Biologist 1 (Wildlife) will coordinate statewide programs for furbearers and small game mammals. The preferred candidate will have excellent writing, data management, and presentation skills and will be familiar with the biology of furbearer and small game mammal species native to New York State. Essential functions include:
•Establishing and maintaining expertise on the management of furbearers and small game mammals.

•Annual work planning including assisting in the development of research, survey, and management proposals to meet furbearer and small game mammal priorities.

•Compilation of survey and monitoring data provided by regional staff, management and analysis of data to assess the status of furbearer and small game mammal species and report preparation of the results of furbearer and small game mammal projects.

•Evaluating, improving, and implementing systems to monitor public use and the population status of furbearers and small game species.

•Working with universities and other partners to develop and carry out research projects to inform decision making.

•Assisting with writing or updating management plans for bobcat, fisher, marten, otter, and other furbearers.

•Recommending appropriate changes to program (e.g., regulations) to meet demands for sustainable use opportunities for the State's 13,000 trappers and 70,000 small game hunters.

•Providing technical guidance to landowners and others on management conflicts with furbearers and small game mammals.

•Developing Bureau policies and guidance to address nuisance and damage issues for this suite of species.

•Maintaining close liaison with key constituents through effective communications with regional personnel and via contacts with statewide organizations. This includes making public presentations, developing web and other media content, and preparation of press releases, newsletters, and social media posts in support of the Department's furbearer and small game mammal programs.

•Assisting Game Management Section staff involved in the implementation of programs for other game species.

Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel, overtime and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
