Minimum Qualifications Four years of professional experience as an automotive and/or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicles and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems. Apprenticeship training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Duties Description Under the supervision of the Park Manager 3 and Park Manager 1, the successful candidate will perform a variety of journey-level motor vehicle mechanic tasks at Beaver Island State Park and associated facilities including repairing and maintaining passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, UTVs, and heavy equipment to include backhoes, tractors, skid steer loaders, and auxiliary electric and hydraulic equipment attachments. The candidate will also be responsible for repairs and preventive maintenance on various grounds maintenance equipment and small engine equipment to include rotary and flail mowing equipment, two cycle small equipment. In addition to the duties outlined above, the selected candidate may also assist in skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, mechanical repair and landscape maintenance. They will assist as directed during emergencies, traffic control and crowd control. During the summer months, the candidate will assist with other park maintenance operations involving operation of tractors, beach groomers, fork lifts, and riding mowing equipment. During winter months, the selected candidate will assist with snow and ice removal which will include shoveling and operation of snow removal equipment/vehicles. The selected candidate may also at times be required to supervise seasonal employees to accomplish needed tasks within the park. The incumbent will also assist with tree removal/pruning operations that will require the operation of chippers, stump grinders and lift equipment as needed. The incumbent will assign, supervise, review, train and evaluate assigned seasonal staff.
OPERATING NEEDS:
• Schedule is variable and may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Shift hours: 7:00am – 3:30pm (variable according to facility needs which may include weekends and holidays).
• Must possess and maintain a NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
• Must already retain or will be required to obtain certification by the Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct NYS vehicle inspections within one year from the date of appointment
• The candidate must be proficient in the use of hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments.
• The candidate must have the ability to supervise and train others.
• Candidate must have the physical ability to carry tools and materials considerable distances to work sites inaccessible by vehicle when needed and be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Equipment operation including snow plowing, tractor and implement operation. Labor intensive projects including tree removal and clean up.
• Candidates with a NYS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B are preferred but not required for this position.
Additional Comments ***Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
