Minimum Qualifications Current NYS Justice Center for Protection of People with Special Needs employee with permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c status as a Program Aide and interested in reassignment; OR New York State employees with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c status as a Program Aide (previously Administrative Aide or Agency Program Aide); OR New York State employees with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c status in a position allocated to a Grade 11 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Duties Description Individual will assist the Legal Assistants in providing professional support to attorneys.
• Duties will include drafting determination letters based upon attorney recommendations and direction;
• Process Requests for Amendment (RFA) received in Appeals Unit and review same for timeliness pursuant to regulation and create appropriate correspondence;
• Process incoming and returned mail;
• Create electronic case folders based upon database review and ensure completeness and accuracy of the folders;
• Assist in creating evidence and disclosure packets including redacting audio and paper records for hearings;
• Review Orders and Decisions received from Hearings Unit for correctness;
• Draft appropriate correspondence based on outcomes set forth in Decisions and Orders;
• Maintain and update as appropriate VPCR and Unit Docket for all of the above;
• Provide telephone support regarding unit questions using database, statute and regulations for guidance;
• Conduct analysis and reporting of trends in Appeals cases with respect to dispositions, scheduling and other statistical and business intelligence metrics
• Maintain files ensuring materials are in electronic and paper case folders as appropriate and consistent with retention polices;
• Such other duties as may be required or assigned
Additional Comments The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs (Justice Center) is charged with protecting over one million New Yorkers under the care or jurisdiction of six state agencies. The following list outlines several of the Justice Center’s key responsibilities:
• Advocate on behalf of individuals with disabilities and provide oversight of quality of care.
• Operate a centralized, statewide 24-hour hotline and incident reporting system staffed by trained personnel.
• Operate a statewide register that contains the names of individuals found responsible for egregious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect.
• Centralize and perform functions relating to criminal history background checks.
• Investigate serious allegations of abuse and neglect.
• Prosecute criminal acts of abuse and neglect.
• Analyze abuse patterns and trends in order to prevent future occurrences.
