Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of a NYS two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) or NYS two-year plumbing training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent plumbing two-year training or apprenticeship program; * OR four (4) years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled journey-level plumber which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in plumbing or training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent will perform journey level work as a Plumber in the restoration, reconstruction, construction and repairs, at State Parks and Historic Sites using the normal tools of the trade in a skilled manner. Employee will perform a variety of duties including but not limited to the following: repair, replace, schedule and perform preventative maintenance of plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves including pneumatic controls, gas and water meters, water pumps, hot water heaters and other gas appliances, heating systems and controls, and various other equipment used in kitchens and cafeterias, and high and low pressure pipe systems that carry water, air or other liquids or gases. Employee will adhere to professional standards common to the plumbing, construction, and preservation trades, will plan and lay out work following blueprints, specifications, oral or written instruction; diagnose problems; draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale; make detailed estimates for costs, including time and materials for various projects and order supplies as needed; be responsible for overall co-ordination and execution of projects. Employee may act independently with a minimum of direct supervision. Assign, supervise, review, train and evaluate work of employees, and assist in other areas of park operations as directed.
Additional Comments Operational Needs:
Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor tasks. Must be able to pass a physical for respirator use. Applicants must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License or obtain it within six months of appointment. Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff, park patrons, and outside businesses and agencies. Ability to communicate in writing and to read and comprehend written material.
