Salary RangeFrom $48728 to $59186 Annually
Minimum Qualifications Current Justice Center for Protection of People with Special Needs employee with permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c status as a Legal Assistant 1 and interested in reassignment; OR current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c status as a Legal Assistant 1; OR current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55b/c service in a position allocated to a Grade 12 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1* of the Civil Service Law.
*Candidates must also possess an associate’s degree (or higher) in a paralegal/legal assistant program OR a certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program where either the degree or certificate was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or college or university accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).

Duties Description Duties will include, but not limited to the following:
• Prepare suggested questions, background material and necessary research for the attorney in the Office of the Special Prosecutor/Inspector General in support of legal proceedings.
• Complete routine investigative work and analysis for attorney review.
• Create and manage complex litigation files including administration of associated data base records.
• Draft subpoenas and track subpoena compliance for Adjudications and Prosecutions.
• Perform research in association with Adjudications and Prosecutions.
• Draft workflow reports including tabulating and creating Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and charts.
• Perform routine analysis of legislation with an impact on the agency.
• Draft legal responses to the courts or other interested parties as directed or authorized by the attorneys.
• Provide litigation support at administrative and other legal proceedings.
• Prepare and send out discovery materials in advance of litigation.
Additional Comments The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs (Justice Center) is charged with protecting over one million New Yorkers under the care or jurisdiction of six state agencies. The following list outlines several of the Justice Center’s key responsibilities:
• Advocate on behalf of individuals with disabilities and provide oversight of quality of care.
• Operate a centralized, statewide 24-hour hotline and incident reporting system staffed by trained personnel.
• Operate a statewide register that contains the names of individuals found responsible for egregious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect.
• Centralize and perform functions relating to criminal history background checks.
• Investigate serious allegations of abuse and neglect.
• Prosecute criminal acts of abuse and neglect.
• Analyze abuse patterns and trends in order to prevent future occurrences.

Position eligible for $3026 annual location pay factor.
