Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If a viable list does not exist a provisional appointment may be made. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
PROMOTIONAL:
THREE months of permanent competitive, non-competitive as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Junior Engineer, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
OPEN COMPETITIVE:
Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;
Or 3. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics AND TWO years of experience listed above in #1;
Or 4. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronic** issued by a regionally accredited college or university AND THREE years of experience listed above in #1.
**Certificates from Trade or Technical Schools will be accepted only if they are institutions that are regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education as following acceptable educational practices.
Duties Description
• Plan, schedule, and perform physical and electronic tests of new traffic signal control equipment and certify that the equipment meets division standards.
• Prepare, manage, review, and interpret traffic signal policy, construction specifications, and equipment product lists.
• Prepare cost estimates and maintain inventory records for materials, supplies, and equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair traffic signal components including conflict and current monitors, DC power supplies, and light emitting diodes.
• Use test software packages to diagnose operational problems.
• Conduct quality assurance studies, physical inspections, and programmatic cost estimates to evaluate alternatives for effectiveness and maintenance needs.
• Develop preventative maintenance procedures for equipment when not provided by manufacturer.
• Assist in shipping and receiving of traffic signal equipment.
Responsibilities may include participating within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
