Minimum Qualifications Permanent service in this title or one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-11 or higher and otherwise eligible for transfer. For transfer under Section 70.4 of Civil Service Law, you must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title allocated to SG-11 or higher, a Bachelor’s or higher degree in Correctional Studies, Criminal Justice, Criminal Science, Criminology, Forensics, Justice Studies, Law Enforcement, Public Justice, or Sociology, AND a passing score on the PCO or PATT exam. Duties Description The Criminal Justice Program Specialist 1 (CJPS 1) will report to a Criminal Justice Program Specialist 2 within the Office of Public Safety. The CJPS 1 will assist with various duties involved with, but not limited to, the Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. The Law Enforcement Accreditation Program provides mechanisms to formally recognize law enforcement agencies for excellence and professionalism displayed by those agencies through compliance with 100+ standards in the areas of administration, operations and training as set by the governing body, the Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council.
The incumbent will perform the following:
• provide technical assistance to law enforcement agencies pursuing accreditation, as well as those maintaining accreditation to assist them with preparing for the assessment process;
• ensure that all program activities are conducted in accordance with program rules and regulations and established policies and procedures set forth by the Council;
• review applications for participation in the program and assist law enforcement agencies in overcoming obstacles and issues to ensure they are successful in their efforts to become accredited;
• coordinate agency assessments and the completion of associated administrative tasks;
• conduct on-site assessments, which are required for an agency to become accredited or maintain accreditation;
• work closely with staff of law enforcement agencies and program assessors to determine their readiness for the assessment, and to coordinate the initial assessment, reassessment, or compliance audit of an agency seeking to become accredited or reaccredited;
• assist the Office of Public Safety Accreditation Program Manager in preparing for the quarterly Accreditation Council meetings;
• participate in the development and delivery of both program manager and assessor training;
• coordinate with information technology staff for content used on the Agency’s external website;
• prepare letters and correspondence to law enforcement staff and program assessors; and
Additional Comments This is a two-year traineeship which leads to a Criminal Justice Program Specialist 1, SG-18 position.
Appointment is subject to Division of Budget waiver approval.
