Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences or engineering, and six years of professional experience in the natural sciences, engineering, environmental analysis or regulation, or in a closely related field, one year of which must have included responsibility for the supervision of subordinate professionals or staff. Alternately, a Masters’ degree will be accepted in lieu of one year of the non-supervisory experience; a Ph.D. will be accepted in lieu of three years of the required non-supervisory experience. A Professional Engineering or Geologist license in New York State will also be similarly considered.

Duties Description The New York State Attorney General’s Environmental Protection Bureau is seeking an experienced environmental scientist or engineer who has a multi-disciplinary background and a strong commitment to environmental and public health protection. As a member of the Environmental Science staff the candidate would be responsible for supporting and assisting the Bureau’s litigation and public advocacy ensuring the New York State Attorney General continues to be a national leader on the environment and public health. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: environmental or civil engineering; chemistry, earth science, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental biology, environmental investigation, remediation and monitoring (air, soil-gas, soil, water), remedial system design, waste characterization and management, management of toxic materials; risk assessment, ecology and natural resources. Proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS)is required, as are strong written and oral communication skills. Proficiency with global positioning systems (GPS) environmental field applications is desired. The successful candidate will be an organized self-starter who can work on multiple files both independently and collaboratively in a team. S/he will demonstrate the ability to use analytical and integrative skills to troubleshoot, lay a firm scientific foundation for legal arguments, and find solutions to pressing problems.

The Environmental Science staff are in the unique position of supporting and representing the Bureau’s legal and policy work. Examples of these tasks include, but are not limited to:

• Assess health and environmental risks associated with air, water, soil, and food contamination.
• Evaluate the potential for harm from exposure (e.g. dispersion modeling, GIS, and exposure assessment).
• Prepare and coordinate materials for legal and/or advocacy activities, including affidavits.
• Apply GIS / GPS and remote sensing technology (e.g., LIDAR) to environmental studies.
• Work with and manage expert witnesses, client agency staff, and student interns.
• Coordinate with state and federal agencies on environmental and public health issues of mutual interest.
• Interact with the public and investigate complaints related to environmental issues.
• Review technical documents and reports.
• Identify, coordinate, and provide oversight for policy and legislative initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
