Provisional Appointment:
In the absence of an appropriate eligible list or transfer, candidates may be provisionally appointed if they are an employee of New York State and have experience as follows:
As a Chief Housekeeper 1 with one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c State service
OR
As a Head Housekeeper with one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c State service.
OR
As a Supervising Housekeeper with two years of permanent non-competitive service.
OR
Candidates who meet the following Open Competitive qualifications may be provisionally appointed:
Six years of housekeeping work experience in a fully functioning housekeeping department in a health care or institutional setting,** three years of which must have included administrative or supervisory work experience;***
OR
An Executive Housekeepers Certificate issued by the International Housekeepers Association, Inc. and four years of housekeeping work experience in a fully functioning housekeeping department in a health care or institutional setting,** three years of which must have included administrative or supervisory work experience.***
Non-Qualifying work experience: Work experience as a janitor, custodian, or hospitality worker is considered non-qualifying for these examinations.
**Examples of qualifying healthcare or institutional settings are, but not limited to: skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, long term care facilities, addiction treatment centers, residential treatment centers, or correctional facilities.
Please note that schools, hotels, convention centers, and office buildings are NOT considered qualifying healthcare or institutional settings.
***For purposes of this examination, administrative work experience is defined as duties focused on planning, coordinating and/or evaluating a housekeeping program. Such duties might include hiring employees, planning work schedules, writing reports, and/or preparing budgets. For purposes of this examination, supervisory work experience is defined as duties focused on the supervision of subordinate staff. Such duties might include assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, and/or motivating subordinates.
Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.
Duties Description As a Chief Housekeeper 2, you would direct the operation and administration of a facility's housekeeping department and may be responsible for the distribution of facility laundry both to and from a consolidated laundry. You would be responsible for the cleaning and sanitation programs for all buildings at a multi-unit facility, including the supervision of a large cleaning staff; plan and schedule staff assignments; recommend changes in work routines, cleaning methods, and equipment; work with the clinical team to ensure that appropriate infection control practices are maintained; inspect buildings to ensure compliance with established cleaning programs; and supervise an inventory system to ensure that proper cleaning materials and supplies are in sufficient quantity.
Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
