Minimum Qualifications REACHABLE ON THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL SERVICE LIST FOR LEGAL ASSISTANT 2 OR PERMANENT OR CONTINGENT PERMANENT STATUS AS LEGAL ASSISTANT 2 OR ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSFER.
Duties Description DUTIES:
Complaint Intake and Preliminary Inquiries
· Review complaints from the public to determine the nature of the complaint, type of response letter to be sent and whether the matter requires the involvement of a lawyer, referral to another agency or other action.
· Make follow-up inquiries to complainants to obtain information to evaluate complaints.
· Respond to telephone calls and email complaints and inquiries from members of the public.
· Perform preliminary inquiries, including of publicly available records under supervision of a bureau attorney.
· Prepare memoranda for bureau attorneys to assist in evaluating complaints and assess preliminary inquiries.
· Maintain electronic database of complaints and monitor open complaints to ensure that they are ultimately closed appropriately.
Files/Records
· Maintain certain electronic databases of shared Bureau files, including of pleadings, resolutions and similar records
Investigations
· Assist in the preparation of subpoenas and correspondence
· Assist in the preparation of exhibits for interviews and examinations
· Attend interviews of witnesses, take notes and draft interview summary memoranda.
· Work with E-Discovery personnel to properly process documents subpoenaed by bureau attorneys
· Index, organize, bates stamp, scan, code and summarize documents subpoenaed by bureau attorneys, including using electronic document management systems (i.e., Relativity).
Litigation
· Assist in the preparation of legal documents (e.g. answers, discovery demands motions, pleadings, etc.), correspondence and forms.
· File documents with courts and compile documents for submission to courts; obtain information from the court; research, identify and retrieve cases and statutes; shepardize cases; conduct research and draft memoranda.
· Prepare exhibits for submissions to court.
· Compile and organize documentation and appellate records.
· Assist at trial.
· Utilize case tracking system.
· Scan and electronically file court records.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
