Minimum Qualifications A license to practice law in the State of New York, which must be maintained for the duration of service as an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH). Three years of recent relevant post-bar legal experience.
Duties Description ALJs, under the direction of the Chief Administrative Law Judge, conduct fair and impartial quasi-judicial hearings and write decisions in cases involving the professions and occupations regulated by the Department of State. The areas of jurisdiction, which exceed 30, include, but are not limited to: real estate brokers/salespersons, cosmetologists, appearance enhancement business owners, notaries public, security guards and private investigators.
ALJs rule on motions, receive and develop evidence, elicit testimony, and issue final decisions. They apply the appropriate laws, regulations and policy to the facts and evidence. ALJs write decisions which must be legally supported, as well as written in language accessible to self-represented litigants, attorneys and the general public.
OAH is committed to expanding access to justice for all New Yorkers. Candidates who share that commitment are preferred. Prior experience as an Administrative Law Judge or Hearing Officer is also preferred.
Additional Comments Per Diem Administrative Law Judges are compensated $285.00 per day. Applicants will be fingerprinted and must submit to a background check.
