Minimum Qualifications G18- Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or a related natural sciences field and two years of post- degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or a related natural sciences field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
G22 - Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or one of the natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field OR a master’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or one of the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in that field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
The preferred candidate will have experience working with infectious agents and handling human specimens; performing diagnostic infectious disease testing, performing nucleic acid extraction and amplification methods; performing DNA sequencing methods and data analysis; optimizing molecular detection methods, developing and validating serological tests, preparing standard operating procedures; using spreadsheets and databases to manage laboratory data.
Duties Description The Research Scientist will be involved in clinical and public health laboratory functions related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), including clinical testing, research and development, and epidemiologic investigations. Responsibilities will include processing blood specimens; recording and managing laboratory data; performing serological and molecular test methods; performing quality assurance tasks and maintaining proper records and documentation. Duties will also include assisting in the development and validation of new laboratory methods; performing troubleshooting and optimization experiments; analyzing experimental data; preparing standard operating procedures; contributing to abstract and manuscript preparation; preparing poster and slide presentations; utilizing computer software and database systems to analyze data and manage specimen repositories and supply inventories.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
