Minimum Qualifications Candidates should possess emotional maturity; the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; the ability to maintain tact, courtesy and sensitivity to the needs of homeless individuals; and the ability to handle difficult situations in a professional, effective manner.
Two years of experience in the planning, development, management, or provision of programs and services, or direct care, to adults, children, and/or families in need of assistance including child care, foster care, adult residential care, child and adult protective care, or homeless shelters and residential facilities for low-income families and individuals.
Duties Description Incumbents will provide outreach to homeless individuals and families in an effort to connect them to available shelters and services. Duties of the positions will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Locate, identify and engage the unsheltered homeless population in the New York City Subway System ("Clients");
• Engage and perform a basic assessment of all Clients for medical vulnerability, safety, and housing status;
• Conduct needs assessments prior to making a placement referral (e.g. program shelter, drop-in center). If the Client is assessed to be chronically homeless or when clinically appropriate, refer to Local Social Services District (LSSD) or LSSD service provider;
• Transport and/or assist with the transport of Clients to Adult and Family Intake Centers, Drop-In Centers, shelters, and detox programs;
• Follow up and track clients to ensure clients are engaged with a service provider and/or have accepted a placement;
• Track and record all engagements with unsheltered homeless;
• Work closely with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), New York Police Department, Department of Homeless Services and other relevant partners to coordinate resources. Develop deployment strategies, in consultation and with the approval of the Program Manager and MTA agency liaisons, using field observations and customer correspondence, such as complaints and referrals from letters, e-mails and telephone calls.
Additional Comments Appointments to these positions are contingent upon the Division of the Budget approval to fill. Full-time, temporary appointments will be made.
These positions include $3026 in location pay.
