• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field plus five years of SQL Server installation & configuration, database administration, performance tuning SQL queries, data extract & interface development, data modeling, and production support.

Extensive hands-on experience in SQL Server configuration, database administration, performance tuning, data modeling, and SQL application development.
• SQL Server - Installation, Configuration, Security Standards, Performance Monitoring.
• SQL Server Cluster setup & management.

Duties Description Primary Purpose
The Senior Database Administrator (SDBA) installs, configures, maintains, and manages performance of SQL servers. The SDBA designs and develops SQL applications, and performs data migration to new systems.

Essential Functions
• Install, configure, maintain, and manage performance of SQL Servers that support business applications. Monitor the health of SQL servers.
• Administer SQL Servers in Development, Test, Production, and Disaster Recovery (DR) environments.
• Create and administer SQL databases set up in cloud environments such as Azure.
• Setup SQL Server clusters to provide redundancy.
• Assist in managing database backups to support Disaster Recovery (DR) functions. Participate in DR testing.
• Develop or assist in the definition of security requirements of databases, entities, and data elements.
• Assist with the analysis and implementation of NY State Information Security Standards.
• Administer SQL Server and database access.
• Upgrade SQL Servers and assist with transitioning applications to a newer version of the server.
• Act as a consultant to other DASNY business units, seeking out areas to improve efficiencies.
• Work with Application Developers and Business Users to analyze business processes and determine data requirements.
• Collaborate with Application Developers to develop and support complex data models.
• Develop or assist with SQL application development. Support database requirements of custom applications. Assist developers with performance tuning complex SQL queries.
• Design and build data interfaces between systems and external entities such as banking, payroll and other financial systems.
• Setup and monitor nightly batch jobs that transfer data between systems or to external entities.
• Work with vendors and consultants to map, migrate, and convert data to new packaged applications.
• Assist with development of database standards such as naming conventions, SQL development best-practices, and performance standards.
• Troubleshoot application and data issues in production.
• Assist with reports and dashboard development.
• Maintain current knowledge of new products and trends in database management.
• Independently build strong relationships with external partners and trustees, including vendors, clients, and other state agencies.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist with the development of RFPs and participate in the evaluation process (of software products and consulting services).
• Ensure compliance with DASNY and NYS policies.
• May train and evaluate employees.
• Assist with the documentation and implementation of procedures.
• Assist with internal controls implementation, review, and testing.
• Undertake special assignments as directed.
• Must maintain regular attendance in accordance with DASNY attendance and leave policies.
• Must adhere to the NYS Information Security Policy Standards established and issued by the NYS Office of Information Technology Services. (Standards can be found on the Intranet).

Supervision of employees may be required.

Physical/Mental/Visual Demands
Occasional travel is required using public transportation, DASNY vehicle, rental vehicle or personal vehicle. This travel may include overnight stays at public accommodations and related establishments. Requires complex and time-pressured decision-making. Overtime or extended work hours may be required.
