Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current DOH employee with permanent status as a Senior Sanitarian, G18 OR
Provisional Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications: you must have: Either 1. A bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences AND one-year experience in Environmental Health protection OR 2. A bachelor’s degree, with 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences, of which at least 18 credits are in the natural sciences, AND two years of experience in environmental health protection. Substitution: A master’s degree in the natural or applied sciences may be substituted for up to one year of required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must have strong interpersonal, problem solving, decision-making and time management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the ideal Candidate must have excellent writing and editing skills and be able to effectively interpret laws and regulations governing adult care and assisted living facilities in New York State.

Duties Description The incumbent will take the lead on investigating and enforcing the provisions of the Public Health Law, Social Services Law and New York Codes, Rules, and Regulations relating to environmental health, sanitation, and safety and plan, direct and review the work of lower level staff. These provisions many other technical standards, including those of the National Fire Protection Association, the National Plumbing Code, etc. The incumbent will determine the compliance of facilities or assess public health problems in the following areas: structure and space provisions; mechanical and electrical systems; ventilation/air conditioning/heating; fire safety (structural and operational); housekeeping; maintenance; laundry; infection control; pest control; solid waste disposal; water supply; plumbing; sewage disposal; accident prevention; dietary/food sanitation; disaster preparedness; hazardous wastes/biohazard wastes; air pollution; and medical systems. The incumbent will also apply the principles of biological and physical sciences and the skills of assessing environmental features to maintain, protect, and improve the health and safety of individuals residing in NYS adult care facilities while at the same time assisting with policy interpretation to staff, facilities, and other governmental agencies.

Additional Comments Contingent-permanent or provisional, full-time. Provisional appointees must take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title and be immediately appointable from the resultant eligible list to maintain employment in position. This position involves travel throughout 17 counties which may include locations not served by public transportation.
