Minimum Qualifications Interested candidates must currently be reachable on the Office Assistant 2 Calculations eligible list or eligible to transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

To be eligible for a 70.1 transfer, an individual must be a current New York State Employee and have one year of permanent competitive service in a qualifying transferable title allocated to a salary grade 7 or above.
Duties Description • After lower-level staff has entered the data from a Withdrawal Application into the computer system, it is assigned to the OA 2 Calc. for review.
• The OA 2 Calc. is responsible for examining the application to insure it has been completed fully and accurately by the member. The individual in this position also compares the member’s signature on the Withdrawal Application to the signatures already on-hand in the member’s folder, to verify its authenticity.
• After an examination of the application has been completed, the OA 2 Calc. must go into the Withdrawal Case to verify that all data entered into the computer system by the examiner has been transcribed correctly.
• In order to verify the information is accurate, the OA 2 Calc. must have the ability to interpret employer payrolls.
• If errors are found in the case, the OA 2 Calc. must return it to the examiner for correction.
• When all information in the Withdrawal Case is correct, the OA 2 Calc. will generate a letter to the member and/or financial institution to be mailed out with the member’s refund check and then close the case.
• Processes and/or reviews all cases required to adjust a member’s account on the computer system;
• The cases the OA 2 Calc. must process or review include those utilized to change a member’s name or address, correct a member’s date or birth and revise a member’s date of service;
• When further information or documentation is necessary in order to process a maintenance case, the OA 2 Calc.is responsible for contacting the employer, member or beneficiary to instruct them on how to proceed;
• In order to process maintenance cases and make telephone calls to members, employers and beneficiaries, the individual in this position must have an in-depth understanding of all Unit policies and procedures;
• They must have the ability to be professional and courteous in their communications, at all times;
• Must have thorough knowledge of the Retirement and Social Security Laws that govern payments made to member beneficiaries, as well as all Unit policies and procedures.
• Must be able to ascertain which form should be sent to payees’ of these cases, and request any necessary documentation from them (death certificates, guardianship papers, power of attorney papers, etc.).
• The OA 2 Calc. must be able to relay accurate information regarding procedures to beneficiaries and have the ability to respond to their questions accurately and in a professional, courteous manner.
• The individual in this position reviews these cases on the computer system, verifying that the data has been entered correctly, and then generates/reviews the check letters created for beneficiaries and estates.
• If corrections are required, the OA 2 Calc. returns the case to the individual who entered the data.

• Ability to read, understand and apply laws, procedures, rules, regulations and guidelines where there are not clear precedents and without detailed direction.
• Ability to perform complicated mathematical computations which include such things as account keeping, audit statistics and/or payroll computations.
• Ability to prepare reports composed of narrative as well as numerical information.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally as required for the position.
• Ability to successfully use software required by the position, including Lotus Notes, calendaring, scheduling, team rooms and bulletin boards: Microsoft Word; and Excel.
• Ability to use common office equipment, including desktops, laptops, photocopiers, calculators, etc.
• Ability to perform tasks accurately within prescribed time frames.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally as required for the position.
