Minimum Qualifications Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in a human services field AND three years’ of experience working as an advocate or service provider in the fields of rehabilitation, developmental disabilities or mental health; OR a Master’s Degree in a human services field AND two years’ of experience as an advocate or service provider in the field of rehabilitation, developmental disabilities or mental health.

The preferred candidate will be an individual with at least three years of experience working with people with various types of disabilities in a variety of settings, experience working in disability rights, inter-governmental and community relations and cross systems collaborations and experience developing and delivering presentations and training.

Duties Description Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
• Supervise 5 person team in regional office locations throughout the state.
• Provide technical assistance and develop processes and procedures necessary to promote and enhance the Individual and Family Support Unit and its functions.
• Manage the coordination of victim’s services during criminal cases and proceedings including direct assistance to individuals and families
• Modify processes as needed to enhance efficiency of response to family/individual concerns.
• Refer, coordinate and communicate with state oversight agencies when needed to facilitate responses to cases.
• Conduct outreach to parents, crime victim/law enforcement and self-advocacy groups.
• Supervise employees in the Individual and Family Support Unit, including Advocacy Specialist 2 staff within the Unit.
• Assist in the implementation of grant-funded programs in support of the unit.

Additional Comments The New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs (Justice Center) is charged with protecting over one million New Yorkers under the care or jurisdiction of six state agencies. The following list outlines several of the Justice Center’s key responsibilities:

• Advocate on behalf of individuals with disabilities and provide oversight of quality of care.
• Operate a centralized, statewide 24-hour hotline and incident reporting system staffed by trained personnel.
• Operate a statewide register that contains the names of individuals found responsible for egregious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect.
• Centralize and perform functions relating to criminal history background checks.
• Investigate serious allegations of abuse and neglect.
• Prosecute criminal acts of abuse and neglect.
• Analyze abuse patterns and trends in order to prevent future occurrences.
