Minimum Qualifications Potential candidates will have a BS or BA in natural resources, planning, forestry, environmental science, geography or GIS.
Proficiency and experience with ArcGIS Desktop 10.x
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Familiarity with ESRI tools and skills such as Spatial Analyst, python scripting, model builder
Experience with utility data collection
Familiarity with ArcGIS Online is desirable
Familiarity with Trimble GPS units (such as the GeoXT) and Pathfinder Office.
GIS Certificate
GIS Internship experience (unpaid or for college credit is acceptable)
Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
Valid driver’s license
Duties Description The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a GIS Technician position. Legislation signed by Governor Cuomo in 2019 directs OPRHP to develop a statewide, non-motorized Trails Plan in 2020. As part of the Plan, OPRHP will compile a comprehensive GIS database of non-motorized, multi-use trails across New York State. Additionally, OPRHP has an ongoing need to maintain its exisiting GIS datasets of park facilities, utilities, and trails. The position is temporary/seasonal and located in Albany, NY at 625 Broadway in the GIS Section, within the Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning. Overnight travel and field work throughout the state may be required.
Responsibilities:
Working under the supervision of GIS and Planning Bureau staff, the successful candidate will:
Develop and maintain a GIS database of non-motorized, multi-use trails in New York State.
Collect and analyze data from Trails Plan stakeholders and partners.
Visualize trail data for review, analysis, and publication using desktop and online GIS platforms.
Perform field work collecting spatial data for trails, utilities, and other Park inventory using GPS.
Assist on various GIS projects and tasks as needed.
Additional Comments This is a temporary/seasonal position within the OPRHP GIS Bureau. The position is expected to be funded through the duration of the planning effort (approx. April 2021).
