Minimum Qualifications ? A degree in conservation biology, ecology, natural resources management, forestry, environmental studies, or a relevant discipline.
? One year or more experience with invasive species identification and control methods
? Familiarity with the ecology and impacts of invasive species in the Finger Lakes region of NY
? Working knowledge of plant identification and/or experience in field botany
? A working knowledge of GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods
? Excellent organizational skills in field setting
? Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and problem solving
? Ability to perform physically demanding work in a variety of outdoor conditions
? Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges
? Ability to navigate and orient oneself in backcountry settings
? Must possess a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
? Experience and/or comfortability with the use of pesticides to control invasive species
? Experience and/or comfortability with power tools and heavy equipment (brush-saw, UTV, tractor, bush-hog, etc.)
Duties Description The regional Invasive Species Technician will work closely with Finger Lakes Environmental Field Team (OPRHP regional Biologist and Stewardship Project Coordinators) and Invasive Species Unit staff to meet regional and statewide stewardship goals. The work of the Invasive Species Technician will focus largely on supporting projects that involve the protection of rare, threatened, and endangered species and natural communities on park lands and Historic Sites. Job duties will primarily involve the survey, management, and monitoring of invasive species (both terrestrial and aquatic), but may also include: site restoration and monitoring, database management, project planning, and education/outreach, as well as other duties to be determined at the discretion of regional staff.
Finger Lakes Environmental Field Team Mission:
The Finger Lakes Environmental Field Team works to aid the Finger Lakes region in meeting its commitment to responsible stewardship of State Parks by focusing on projects that a) conserve rare and threatened species and natural communities, b) restore and enhance habitats and natural communities, and c) engage with other Parks staff to incorporate stewardship and environmental planning.
? Coordinate with Environmental Field Team staff to plan, prioritize, and address invasive species issues
? Collect and manage field data using standardized survey methods
? Survey, remove, and/or monitor invasive species (aquatic and terrestrial plants, forest pest/pathogens)
? Plan and coordinate with contractors to accomplish projects and ensure contract requirements are met
? Perform native plantings/other restoration duties
? Provide guidance and support to field staff and volunteers (ECC, SCA, FORCES, partners, etc.)
? Maintain up-to-date project information in statewide databases (Dept. Environmental Planning and Stewardship, ArcGIS Online, iMap)
? Respond promptly to statewide Early Detection/Rapid Response needs
? Conduct trainings for regional staff (Best Management Practices, iMap Invasives, etc.)
Additional Comments Position Duration: May 18th – November 18th / Full time (40 hours/week - 26 weeks)
