Minimum Qualifications Diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems or an Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution: grad from a tech or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S., in automotive or diesel repair may be substituted for one year grad for a one year post HS cert in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
Duties Description Diagnoses and performs major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on self-propel and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment. Installs body fender work on self and non-self- propelled vehicles and equipment. Maintains diesel powered equipment and components such as hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and air brakes, automotive electronics, fuel injection system, turbochargers and starting systems. Operates test equipment and power tools, including equipment that assists in the diagnosis of electronic engine control systems. Welds, cuts and brazes a variety of materials using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment. May supervise, train and instruct subordinates. When supervising inmates, secures tools and equip used.
Incumbent must be aware of and account for the activities of these supervised individuals. Orders, receives and inventories supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
