Minimum Qualifications *Provisional: A bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences, including or supplemented by 24 college credits in chemistry, and four years of post- bachelor’s, professional-level laboratory experience performing chemical, physical, microbiological and/or microscopical analysis of environmental samples, one year of which must include administering a quality assurance/quality control program for a laboratory to a national standard. One year of experience as a technical director, manager or supervisor for an accredited lab may be substituted for the quality assurance/quality control experience on a month-by-month basis.
*Selected candidates will be required to take and pass an appropriate Civil Service examination after appointment and be immediately reachable from the resulting eligible list.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of environmental laboratory standards, quality assurance, audits, and applicable laws and regulations. Ability to apply knowledge from laboratory settings to regulatory enforcement and compliance activities. Two additional years relevant experience. Ability to work independently as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. The preferred candidate will have and maintain the Environmental Protection Agency Drinking Water Laboratory Certification as required by state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
Duties Description Environmental Laboratory Consultants (ELC) inspect laboratories performing environmental analysis, evaluate the performance of environmental laboratories, document findings, perform follow up activities, and investigate alleged violations and reported incidents. Provide consulting services to assist laboratories in improving methodologies and procedures and periodically assist with program and proficiency test development and review.
Additional Comments *Provisional, competitive, full-time appointment. Selected candidates will be required to take and pass an appropriate Civil Service examination after appointment and be immediately reachable from the resulting eligible list. IMPORTANT: This position requires extensive year-round field work and overnight travel within and outside the state, including international travel, including areas not served by public transportation. At the time of appointment, and continuously thereafter, you will be required to have a valid passport or enhanced driver’s license, and a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
