Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the NYS CSEA Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license is preferred, but not required, for this position.

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill a Maintenance Assistant position. This is a temporary/hourly position in the Bureau of Environmental Design and Improvement located in the Hudson River region. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assist in the completion of minor rehabilitation special projects.

Assist with demolition of existing walls and floors; remove debris.

Assist with carpentry repairs and framing of walls, doors and windows.

Replace structural steel beams.

Assist with replacement of walls with waterproof barrier, drywall and insulation as needed.

Prepare surfaces for installation of tile or for painting.

Assist with installation of plumbing pipes and drains integral to building and campus operation systems.

Assist with installation of fixtures including toilets, sinks, shower bodies, shower heads, and washtubs.

Additional Comments This position is part of the Hudson River Special Project team, which is responsible for completing capital funded projects at various facilities within the Hudson River area. The regional revitalization team concept was first adopted for the New York City region in 1984-85, and soon expanded to five regions that cover the entire state. The Environmental Revitalization Teams are made up of temporary General Mechanic, Maintenance Assistant, and Facility Operations Assistant 1 positions that perform ongoing maintenance and small renovation projects to augment facility support staff services. The teams operate on an ongoing basis, making visits at each OMH facility in the region twice each year.
