Salary RangeFrom $107005 to $133635 Annually
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree
- Admission to the New York State Bar

-Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
Duties Description The duties of the Assistant General Counsel include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assignments will vary and include providing assistance with rendering “in-house counsel” legal guidance to System staff
• Applicant will be expected to develop and serve as subject matter expert on benefits, regulatory and compliance related matters
• Prepare opinions, determination letters and memorandum of law
• Interpret statutes and rules and regulations
• Manage matters which become subject of litigation
• Review Trust documents for beneficiary designations, Powers of Attorney and other court documents (Guardianships, Custodial documents)
• Provide legal advice and guidance in review of matrimonial orders (DROs)
• Familiarity with Subpoenas and FOIL requests
• Provide advice and counsel on non-investment/non-benefits matters which may arise in course of System’s operation
• Comfortable presenting in a Board setting
• Generally assist the General Counsel and other Office of the General Counsel staff
Additional Comments THIS IS NOT A REMOTE WORK POSITION.
This position does not come under the jurisdiction of the Department of Civil Service. It comes under the Manager/Executive Plan. New appointees to Manager/Executive Plan positions must serve a one-year review period. If you are currently employed by NYSTRS in a Confidential or Negotiating Unit position, you will be granted leave without pay from your current position while you are serving the review period. Upon successful completion of the review period, the hold on your current position will be discontinued and you will no longer have any rights under Civil Service.
