Minimum Qualifications • Must be capable of working independently and during a variety of weather conditions (rain, wind, etc.).
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a term and condition of employment. Must have reliable transportation to and from work locations.
• Attention to detail. Ability to work early hours. Strong communication skills. Ability to interact with the public.
• Completed or pursuing a degree in biology, environmental science, natural resources, or related field is preferred.
Duties Description New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation operates 87 bathing beaches across the state. To ensure public safety, State Parks monitors water quality weekly at each of its beaches. This position will be located on Long Island and collect bathing beach water samples from several of the East End state parks. This position is being funded out of BEACH Act grant program funds. The main purposes are to (1) coordinate the Long Island water quality monitoring program and (2) meet state and federal laws regarding monitoring and notification.
Locations: Position is based out of Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Routine beach monitoring to occur Monday and Tuesday. Sampling may also be needed on Wednesday - Fridays in certain situations following exceedances, rainfall, or other unique circumstances. Samples will be collected at the following State Park beaches: Wildwood, Sunken Meadow, Heckscher, and Hither Hills. Samples will also be collected at Montauk Downs pools.
• Incumbent will need to be available for early (6AM – 7:30AM) start time.
• Collect water quality samples from Long Island Region beaches and pools and deliver samples to PACE Analytical laboratory in Melville, NY.
• Complete lab paperwork and field sheets.
• Setup resampling and rainfall monitoring with lab and parks.
• File paperwork.
• Enter monitoring and field sheet data.
• Acquire and enter rainfall data once per month.
• Send out closure updates to Regional and Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning water quality staff.
• Track Long Island closures in Word listing and Excel document.
• Complete regional or park operational/environmental tasks in afternoons and on most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Additional Comments Position available from mid-May through mid-September. Pay rate will depend on education and experience.
