Minimum Qualifications This is a full-time, non-competitive position. The minimum qualifications for appointment to a Research Scientist 3 position are: A Bachelor’s Degree and four years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a Master’s Degree and three years of such experience; OR a Ph.D. in the appropriate field and two years of such experience. Appropriate fields include: Biostatistics, Economics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related social science field.
Preferred Qualifications include:
• Experience conducting epidemiological research, statistical analysis, and data linkage
• Experience with time series analysis and spatio-temporal modeling
• Experience in GIS and Data visualization (e.g. Tableau or related software)
• High proficiency with SAS statistical analysis software
• Substantial working knowledge of public health
• Experience in data driven public health program evaluation
• Authorship in behavioral health or suicide prevention related program evaluation, surveillance, and/or research in peer-reviewed journal(s)
Duties Description The Suicide Prevention Center of New York at the Office of Mental Health is recruiting to fill one Research Scientist 3, G-25, position. Under general supervision, the Research Scientist 3 will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the state's suicide prevention analytic plan. Specifically, this would include developing a plan to optimize the State's use of existing data sets for suicide prevention. The incumbent’s duties would be divided across primarily three main domains: program evaluation, surveillance, and research.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Perform program evaluation for a host of initiatives being implemented by SPO and the team at the Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY) in diverse settings (e.g. schools, health systems, communities, etc.).
o Design analytic strategies to determine program effectiveness, evaluate outcomes, and improve quality of outcomes across all SPCNY initiatives.
• Contribute to presentations and reports by SPCNY staff and OMH with the latest suicide surveillance and program evaluation data, responding rapidly to data requests from internal and external stakeholders, especially OMH leadership.
• Utilize surveillance systems to identify at risk populations, identify emerging trends, predict patterns, and recognize risk factors.
• Design and conduct research and surveillance in collaboration with partners to better understand links between behavioral health and suicide.
• Design and conduct analysis of existing data to support planning for process change and new initiatives.
• Design and lead surveys to obtain new data to support suicide prevention planning.
• Demonstrate fluency in using datasets germane to suicide surveillance, including but not limited to CDC WISQARS fatality reports, Violent Death Reporting System, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, NYS DOH SPARCS, vital records, and syndromic data sets.
o Manage and link data sets, develop statistical summaries, interpret results (including charts, tables, and graphs), and disseminate data to relevant stakeholders
• Work closely with suicide prevention team leadership and staff to coordinate analysis and research
o Collaborate with other analytic teams at the NYS Office of Mental Health, Department of Health, and other partners statewide
o Collaborate with NYS DOH around access and analysis of datasets germane to suicide surveillance and research aimed at advancing NYS suicide prevention.
• Provide technical assistance and consultation to other epidemiologists and data analysts on best practices in analytic design methods and analysis, especially as it relates to suicide
• Author technical and research reports for senior managers and external stakeholders and publications based on findings from analyses
