Minimum Qualifications Appointment method:

Duties Description The Department of Financial Services (DFS) supervises and regulates insurance, banking and other financial industries. Our mission is to reform the regulation of financial services in New York to keep pace with the rapid and dynamic evolution of these industries, to guard against financial crises and to protect consumers and markets from fraud.

DFS seeks candidates to fill the position of Financial Services Examiner 1 to help the Department keep pace with the rapid and ever-evolving financial services industry, including money laundering, terrorist financing, cyber security, affordable health care, mortgage and insurance fraud, and consumer protection, among others. Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Monitors various types of financial services activities according to the statutory responsibilities of the agency;
• Reviews and analyzes different types of documents, transactions, operations and data for compliance with Financial Services laws, rules, and regulations;
• Assists parties such as consumers and financial services institutions in resolving problems by interpreting program guidelines and regulations;
• Prepares narrative reports and draft correspondence concerning the agency’s regulatory and examination programs and standards for financial services entities; personally handle routine regulatory activities; and
• Other appropriate and occupationally related duties as assigned.

Extensive travel may be required, including overnight travel. Appointees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job in carrying out their responsibilities in any location to which travel is required, including locations not accessible by public transportation. Field work and travel expenses will be reimbursed on a fixed schedule as determined by the Office of the State Comptroller.

Additional Comments Positions located within the New York City metropolitan area, as well as Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester Counties, are also eligible to receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment.
