Minimum Qualifications EITHER: 1) Reachable on the Civil Service eligible list; OR 2) Eligible for reassignment by virtue of having permanent competitive service as a Senior Accountant (G-18); OR 3)Eligible for transfer under the provisions of the Civil Service Law by virtue of having one year of permanent competitive service in an appropriate title.
Preferred Qualifications:
·Strong functional knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials and/or HR, or similar financial/enterprise software
· Experience working on teams implementing software and ERP solutions
· Strong functional knowledge of accounting and finance processes (e.g. Financial Reporting, AP, AR, Payroll, Cash, etc.)
· Exceptional data analysis skills
· Exceptional business analysis skills, particularly in accounting and finance business processes
· Experience analyzing and implementing internal controls
· Ability to successfully collaborate with other Finance units and NYSTRS departments to achieve positive outcomes
· Ability to document business processes in narratives and flowcharts
· Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
· Critical thinking and desire to improve processes
· Demonstrate ownership of assigned work
· Desire to provide exceptional customer service
· Ability and desire to build strong, cooperative team relationships
Duties Description
Under the direction of an Associate Accountant, the Senior Accountant/Trainee will work in the Finance Systems Unit within the Finance Department. The Finance Systems Unit is responsible for the evaluation of current finance processes, systems, and technology for improvement, automation, compliance and efficiency. The Senior Accountant/Trainee will be responsible for analyzing processes and data and assist in identifying how to better leverage current Finance Department systems/technology and additional technology/systems that can further improve operations.
The Senior Accountant/Trainee is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
· Evaluate current accounting processes and systems for improvement, automation and efficiency
· Research new accounting/finance technology and systems to improve operations
· Support the implementation of new/improved finance-related technology and systems by providing business and data analysis
· Build and maintain a working knowledge of the systems and technology used by NYSTRS, as they relate to the Finance Department and retirement benefit administration
· Build and maintain a working knowledge of the functions and duties of all the Finance Department units
· Work with Finance Department units to identify potential efficiencies and IT needs
· Gather operational and functionality needs for IT business analysts, project managers and developers
· Work with customer departments to identify ways to better automate processes to increase compliance and efficiency
· Maintain documentation for Finance Department systems and assist in provide training to end-users
· Assist with the tracking and management of Finance Department IT projects

The work hours of this position are subject to change in accordance with Article 12 of the collective bargaining agreement.
*This position may be filled as an Accountant Trainee 1 (SG-14) which requires successful completion of a two-year traineeship in order to advance to the Senior Accountant (SG-18). The salary indicated on this posting is reflective of the Grade 18. Those hired at the trainee level will be paid at the starting salary for a Grade 14 which is $51,923.
