Minimum Qualifications Reachable on the Legal Assistant 1 or Legal Assistant Trainee civil service eligible list (you must have taken and passed the civil service exam for either title in order to be placed on the eligible list)

Permanent or contingent permanent status as a Legal Assistant 1 or LA Trainee

Duties Description This position exists in the Appeals and Opinions Bureau.

•Under supervision of reviewing attorneys, independently compile records of prison administrative proceedings and prepare all pertinent legal documents including state appellate court briefs, appendices, and memoranda, proposed orders, answers to article 78 petitions, motions, and related correspondence.
•Review each assigned case, ascertain its status, and comply with all court-ordered deadlines.
•Prepare comparative analysis against similar cases and petitions that have previously come before the bureau.
•Conduct legal research into pertinent areas of law from a variety of traditional and electronic sources for attorney review.
•Review rules of procedure in applicable court.
•Analyze records from courts and client agencies to determine Bureau response.
•Check legal and record citations in legal papers prepared by attorneys.
•Respond to inquiries from client agencies and Bureau attorneys.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
