Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a master’s degree or higher AND a valid NYS teaching certificate AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI);
• Minimum of five years classroom teaching experience or previous curriculum development work; and/or
• Experience and training in the areas of orientation and mobility or Braille.


Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for an Instructor (Curriculum Specialist) position in the New York State School for the Blind. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams;
• Assist department leaders and classroom instructors with the development, implementation and monitoring of a school-wide curriculum plan based on the Expanded Core Curriculum;
• Participate in or facilitate curriculum review committees;
• Select textbooks and other instructional materials for districtwide implementation;
• Set expectations for which parts of the curriculum must be covered within the school year;
• Stay informed of trends in instructional methods and educational technology;
• Assist teachers in incorporating new technology into their lessons;
• Provide feedback to teachers based on individual observation and student performance data;
• Use data to monitor performance on the New York State Learning Standards;
• Collaborate with department leaders and instructional staff to develop curriculum aligned assessment measures;
• Write grant proposals related to curriculum and instructional matters;
• Provide professional development and technical assistance to support classroom instructors’ implementation of curriculum;
• Serve as a resource to staff and teachers in the curriculum, instruction, and assessment process; and
• Perform other duties, as assigned, by the Department Head or Superintendent of Schools.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, 10-month appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and a valid NYS teaching certificate will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Candidates are required to possess a valid NYS teaching certificate at the time of hire. Continued employment as an Instructor (Curriculum Specialist) is dependent upon maintaining a valid NYS teaching certificate. Failure to maintain a valid NYS teaching certificate will result in removal from employment. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

* Leads to a maximum salary of $71,628 - $91,323 through annual performance advances.
