TEACHER 4/SG-17
Minimum Qualifications for taking the Open Competitive Examination: Current New York State Education Department permanent/professional certification in classroom teaching in the appropriate specialty, or current comparable Emergency COVID-19 certificate; AND, two years of post-certification (provisional/initial or permanent/professional) teaching experience in that same specialty.
COVID-19 Certifications: Applicants who apply with the COVID-19 certificate must obtain their initial or professional certificate to remain employed. When applying for the examination and filling out the online questionnaire, you should select the initial or professional certificate you intend to obtain before the expiration of your COVID-19 certificate. Not having an initial or professional certificate after the expiration of your COVID-19 certificate will be considered a loss of certification and will result in termination of employment.
*If you apply for the High School Equivalency Preparation examination(s), you must possess New York State Certification in one of the following: English Language Arts 7-12, Mathematics 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, Reading, Literacy, Biology 7-12, Earth Science 7-12, Chemistry 7-12, and/or Physics 7-12.
**If you apply for the Elementary School Subjects examination(s), you must possess New York State Certification in one of the following: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6); Pre Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6; Nursery, Kindergarten & Grades 1-6; or Common Branch Subjects (1-6). VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 1/SG-12
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority;
OR 2. an associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience;
OR 3. a bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience. (E 5/5/2016)
VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 2/SG-13
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 9 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment;
OR 2. an associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and two years of related trade experience;
OR 3. a bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and one year of related trade experience. Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination: Professional certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.

- You may refer to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Teaching Initiatives for a description of experience requirements by specialty title.
- Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor’s degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines.
- Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under option 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2. (E 5/5/2016)
Duties Description Make plans for teaching assignments consistent with overall course objectives. Conducts class sessions using daily lesson plans. Evaluates learner’s performance and progress the class. May speak in the facilities education program before community and other interested groups. May perform some administrative tasks of the Education Supervisor in their absence.
