Preferred Qualification: The preferred candidate will have a master’s or higher-level degree in public health or environmental health/science, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathmatics, or another closely related field. Experience in environmental, occupational, disaster, and/or reproductive epidemiologic research is preferred, as well as exposure assessment, identification and surveillance of adverse health outcomes, and environmental risk factors of disease. The preferred candidate will be proficient in the collection, management, linkage, and analysis of environmental and human health data; have excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences; and have strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS), SAS, R, Tableau, and working with large datasets is desirable. Preferred candidates should have proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint, and have the ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

Duties Description The Research Scientist will join a strong scientific research team in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will provide statistical and epidemiologic support to various projects, including but not limited to biomonitoring, birth defects surveillance, and surveillance associated with emerging issues. The incumbent will participate in various phases of epidemiological research, including: problem definition, literature review, study design, executing research plans, acquiring and managing relevant data, statistical/spatial/temporal analyses, summarizing findings, interpreting and sharing results, and preparing grant proposals, reports, and publications. Other responsibilities may include: participating in various environmental, occupational, and reproductive health studies to determine risk factors of disease; monitoring and evaluating the health effects of exposure to toxic substances at home, at work, and in the community; and assistance with exposure investigations and surveillance to identify and reduce health risks. The incumbent will also incorporate GIS to map disease and risk factors; conduct environmental public health surveillance; liaise with other state/federal agencies towards coordinating epidemiologic investigations; provide public health education regarding health risks; and provide technical support and training to junior level research staff.

Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (less than 20%).
