Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trade worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course in locksmithing.

Duties Description Under direction, a Maintenance Assistant (Locksmith) performs a variety of maintenance, repair, installation and record keeping activities for lock and key systems in a State facility including but not limited to the following:

• Remove inoperative locking mechanisms, disassembles
and removes and replaces defective parts, or removes
debris causing malfunction.

• Installs new locks in doors, cabinets, windows and so
forth following manufacturer's instructions.

• Maintains locks by disassembling, cleaning, oiling and
replacing worn or broken parts.

• Opens locks where no keys exist, or locks that are
jammed.

• Makes new and duplicate keys as necessary.

• Keeps extra keys for locks.

• Keeps records to maintain the identity of locks and
keys.

• Issues keys and key sets, and keeps record of the
transactions.

• As assigned, performs a variety of routine carpentry
tasks related to lock and key systems such as installing
door and window hardware, installing door checks and
sash fittings, and replacing broken panes and glazing
windows.

• As assigned, a Maintenance Assistant (Locksmith)
functions as a lead worker over a small maintenance
crew usually consisting of Maintenance Helpers and
Laborers.

• Under direction, incumbents participate in work in other
maintenance specialties when not engaged in
locksmithing work.

Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

This position is eligible for a Downstate Adjustment of $3,026.
