Duties Description POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Provide professional nursing services to patients on the Extended Treatment Unit.

The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), in collaboration with the Office of Mental Health (OMH) and King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, are in the process of developing two specialized programs designed specifically to provide intervention and treatment for individuals who are both dually diagnosed with intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental illness/behavioral health needs, and who in are in an active period of psychiatric/behavioral health crisis. Individuals who meet eligibility criteria will receive admission to the King’s County Hospital (KCH) psychiatric inpatient unit (IU) where they will participate in approximately six-weeks of crisis intervention and intensive treatment.

In cases where additional active treatment is warranted, OPWDD will provide further specialized psychiatric and behavioral habilitation services for up to six-months through the Extended Treatment Unit (ETU). The OPWDD ETU provides specialized psychiatric and behavioral habilitative services for up to twelve individuals at any given time. Services at the ETU maintain a focus on continuous assessment, active treatment and discharge planning to assure a successful return to the individual’s home or community-based setting following treatment. The OPWDD ETU staff will be provided with specialized training alongside professional clinicians dedicated to the treatment milieu. In addition, the NY START (Systemic Therapeutic Assessment Resources and Treatment) program (I/DD and behavioral health specialist) will consultant with both the KCH IU and the OPWDD ETU (ICF under 483 regulations).

Active Treatment, Appropriate Behavior and Community inclusion will be the main focus of the ETU individuals. The individualized activities will mostly be in the community except for ADL skill training (meal prep, etc) as needed. The goal is to get the individuals stabilized acclimated to the community and discharged back to their Home/IRA ASAP no longer than 6 mos.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Nurse Administrator the incumbent will independently perform the following duties: Provide professional nursing services appropriate to individuals served by the unit to which they are assigned. Provide nursing interventions consistent with the overall treatment plan. Perform daily nursing assessments, provide first aid and emergency nursing care, and act as health liaison with medical consultants.

Additional Comments • Please note, the posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 16 ($53,826), along with any special salary treatments in effect for this position in this location, such as a Geographic Differential ($18,000). The posted maximum salary (Job Rate - $68,511) includes the previously mentioned Geographic Differential.
