Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
• Three years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work, of which one year involved supervision over subordinates; or one year as a Senior Grounds Worker.
• This position requires traveling within and between campuses, and operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment. A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement, and no Airbrake Restriction is required.
• Must possess a category 3A New York State commercial pesticide applicators license.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Two (2) years of experience in coordinating staff and equipment for snow and ice removal in a campus environment preferred.
• Ability to develop, update, and monitor grounds maintenance, snow removal, and preventive maintenance plans. A knowledge of landscaping, irrigation techniques, horticulture, and ornamental and turf management.
• Computer literacy skills that includes experience with a work order management system, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with the methods, materials, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and trimming a variety of types of trees, shrubs, plants, ground cover, and grasses is preferred.

Duties Description Position Summary:
You will be responsible for completing the tasks listed below as a Supervisor of Grounds in Facilities Campus Operations at The University at Buffalo:

• Ensure that the University grounds are attractive and well-kept by planning work assignments and actively supervising the quality of grounds keeping services.
• Supervise and assign work assignments; develop schedules for grounds, recycling, moving services and other various work areas as assigned by providing oral and written instructions, training and assisting in task performance.
• Trains personnel, or oversees training, on how to properly perform services, including operation of equipment, safe use of chemicals, and customer interface and encourages the exercise of initiative by fostering pride in maintaining the campus to the highest departmental standards.
• Ensure that work is completed safely and schedules are met.
• Use materials such as pesticides, sprayers and dusts, as well as fertilizers to control pests and horticultural diseases.
• Prepare and maintain written & oral reports including Federal and State mandated documents, as well as establish written procedures for recycling and moving services.
• Be willing to work overtime for snow removal, special events and other seasonal requirements.
• Coordinate staff & equipment for snow / ice removal in a campus environment as well as coordinating moves and special event setups.
• Be familiar with NYS Executive Order 142 requirement regarding recycling goals and be able to implement policies and procedures to meet those goals.

Departmental Operating Needs:
• Incumbent must have ability to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors and the campus community. This position will require working in a team atmosphere, so the candidate should have strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

• A knowledge of landscaping, irrigation techniques, horticulture, and ornamental and turf management is required. Knowledge of the federal and state regulations governing the use, control, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and similar chemicals is required.
• Because the incumbent will have supervisory responsibilities over grounds workers performing physical labor utilizing various motorized equipment and tools and will be responsible for overseeing safe work practices of the staff and exercise good judgment relating to work zone safety, and the safety of the campus community, an understanding of supervisory/management skills is required. Must be able to delegate responsibilities, develop an effective work force, promote teamwork, and provide daily direction to the workforce based upon policy guidelines.
• This position is defined as safety-sensitive, and as such, is subject to alcohol and drug testing under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
• The candidate must possess and have proven positive customer service skills; must also possess good communication skills and be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions
• Incumbent must be willing to work overtime for necessary snow removal and other seasonal requirements that are needed to maintain safe operations. This position is classified as “Essential Personnel” and as such will require a willingness to work and coordinate off-hours/emergency activities.

Additional Comments Physical Demands:
The ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds is required. The ability to operate push and riding power mowers, chain saws, commercial tractors, and similar grounds maintenance equipment is required. The ability to climb ladders, up to 15 feet, is required.
